After writing one of my recent posts, I found a blog called "Yoga Like Salt" where the author, a Yoga instructor, had an experience with a student who brought her minister to benefit from the teachings of the class. The minister gave the student a stern talk about the role of Yoga in her Christian beliefs, implying that the various icons in the studio relate to worshiping of false Gods through the practice of Yoga. The author did a very good job of explaining how she responds to such claims in her class and I wanted to share some of that with the readers here. Her response was that Yoga, though has roots in Hinduism and Buddhism, is a means for those of any faith to focus on their thoughts and prayers. Her quoted response to students questioning the role of Yoga within Christian beliefs is as follows:
"It's my belief that yoga is a form of prayer. To whom or what you pray is your own business. It's not my role to have that influence in your life. Yoga can support your existing belief system."
